Artist’s Statement
Subject matter for art is everywhere. There is no lack of material to work with, just a shortage of time. So in the time available I paint watercolour paintings of the places that I visit and enjoy, such as Algonquin Park or of the surroundings where I live.
When not completing commissions, I paint for myself. I enjoy painting the light in nature; the distances within a landscape; the beauty that springs up in the complexities of compositions everywhere.
When necessary, every detail possible is at times entered into the creation of a painting; while at other times a free, confident and loose style is used to create an effect that totally completes an image.
Painting is serious fun. It makes you look closely at everything that is around you and permits you to interpret it in a very personal way. And, when a piece is done others may be able to share in what you have experienced.
Watercolour painting is the fisherman. I am the fish. I went for the bait years ago and am still caught.
Biography
Mike was interested in creating pieces of art from a very early age. He worked with oils for some twenty years, then acrylics for twenty years, followed by nine years of watercolour painting. He now works with all three, plus conte and graphite, but devotes the majority of his time to works using watercolours.
Mike was a self taught artist for years, but over the past nine years, he has studied under 25 different artists to acquire knowledge and skills in watercolour media, as well as in oils, acrylic, graphite and conte. He is himself an instructor and has taught watercolour classes at the Woodstock Art Gallery for the past four years.
He has exhibited in Kitchener, Waterloo, London and Woodstock. He has numerous paintings in many homes in his community , and farther afield.
